Customs and Cars

Background

Olim Chadashim, Temporary Residents (A1), Ktin Chozrim and Ezrachim Olim are granted customs privileges which have the effect of allowing the Oleh to import household items, appliances and personal belongings, without paying the customs duties and other taxes that are usually imposed on those items.

Period of Privileges

Customs privileges last for three years from the date of Aliyah.

Customs privileges may be extended in the following circumstances:

  • For the period of compulsory army service

  • If the entitled person started studying in a recognised institution  of higher learning within 18 months of his date of Aliyah, for a period not exceeding five years (excluding students of Medicine and Law),  the period will be extended for one year, from the date of completion of the studies

  • If the person leaves Israel for a period exceeding six months during his period of privileges he will be able to reclaim the period of privileges from the day he left the country (this does not apply to those with Katin Hozer status)
