Education has always been a high priority for the “people of the book” and the pre-state leadership accorded great importance to founding universities. Strong reputations have been built since, attracting students from around the world.
The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in possibilities for higher education available in Israel. The growth in the number of institutions offering diplomas and degrees has been demand led, with an increasing number of high school and army graduates wishing to further their education whilst staying within Israel.
New institutions have opened at an unprecedented rate. Foreign universities now offer the possibility of studying through local campuses and the established eight universities and numerous colleges have expanded and updated the fields of study available, to meet the needs of the market place.
Israel now has one of the most educated populations in the world with access to further opportunities still on the increase.
Entry Requirements
Institutions usually take into account the following factors:
- Bagrut or other High School matriculation grades
- Psychometric exam scores
- Hebrew and English proficiency
Other faculties may have further requirements such as personal interviews, art portfolios etc.
Registering
In order to register for a specific institution, the relevant registration form must be completed and a fee paid. The institution will check whether or not the applicant meets its requirements and will then notify the applicant accordingly as to whether or not he has been accepted.
Registration is usually carried out in January or February for the following academic year. In certain cases, late registration may be possible. This must be checked with the institution itself.
Advanced Registration
In most western countries it is possible to make advance registration arrangements. The process is coordinated by a Jewish Agency Aliyah Shaliach with the Student Authority. The Shaliach will provide guidance over which documents will be required. |
