Your status in Israel
The issue of status is one of immense importance when it comes to making the move to Israel and also may be essential prior to this time.
In certain cases, a person has no choice as to what his status will be, especially for a person who has one or more Israeli parent and is therefore considered to be Israeli, despite possibly having been born and lived all his life overseas. Likewise, a person who lived in Israel as a child with the status of Israeli, Oleh or Temporary Resident before going to live overseas, will be subject to certain restrictions. It is important to be aware of these limitations to avoid the possibility of harming eligibility for Aliyah benefits later on.
In the case of a person who does not have either of these backgrounds, the choice is generally that of staying as a Tourist, becoming a Temporary Resident or making Aliyah (taking on an Oleh status). Each of these has a different meaning and has pros and cons associated with them. The difference between statuses is often confusing.
This section aims to cover the most common statuses, and to explain their meanings. It contains information on what benefits are available for each status and what documents may be necessary in order to qualify for these benefits. |
